Rick Dunn

Rick Dunn Rick won silver at the 2002 and 2003 World Championships and has twice been a world champion, winning gold in the four in 2001 and the coxed four in 2000.

In 2004 he raced in a pair with Toby Garbett. The duo were second in the GB National Team Trials. They missed the season's opening world cup through illness, reached the B Final in Munich and were then fourth at the world cup final leg in Lucerne.

Both were then selected for the Olympic Games in Athens where they won the B Final of the men's pair in dramatic fashion in a charge to the line. That gave the duo 7th place overall at the Games after a year in which they had both been sorely disappointed at not being selected for the Olympic four.

In 2003 Rick was part of the four which showed strong form in the early rounds of the World Championships and won their semi-final to secure an Olympic qualifying place and progression to the A Final. There, they had a slow start but made a dramatic surge in the second half of the race to pass the 2002 World Champions Germany, but could not quite catch Canada, who led by 0.6 seconds at the line. This mirrored almost exactly the 2002 Worlds result, where Germany took gold, just 2 tenths of a second ahead of the British four.

. In 2001 Rick had an outstanding season, becoming World Champion in the four, worthy successors to the Sydney Olympic four. At the 2001 World Championships, the four won their heat in style and then produced an outstanding performance to win the gold medal. They took the lead at the halfway mark and pulled away from the field to take the world title by a margin of 1.58 seconds in close to world record time.

Rick was stroke-man of the coxed four which won gold at the 2000 World Championships. The crew dominated the event and this showed the depth of the British men's squad who won 2 Olympic Golds in Sydney. Rick just missed selection for the eight at the 2000 Olympic Games and went to Sydney as a reserve.

Rick took up rowing at Cambridge Boat Club in '99 because of his late father's interest in the sport as a coach at Cambridge University had rubbed off on him. He made his international debut in 1994 in the British junior eight and came back from the World Junior Championships with a bronze medal.

In 1995 Rick moved down to London to start a degree in Biochemistry at Imperial College. He joined the College boat club and was in the eight which won the premier event at Henley Royal Regatta, the Grand Challenge Cup, in 1996. This was a remarkable feat as international crews usually win this event. Rick finished his season by being selected for the British Under 23 four and came home with a gold medal.

Rick studied Economics at Cambridge University from 2000-2002 and was a key member of the victorious Light Blue eight which turned around Oxford's 2000 win in the annual University Boat race. His interests outside rowing include snowboarding, travelling and cooking.
